Position Summary
The PRN Histotechnician will utilize the knowledge necessary to assist the IHC laboratory at Caris Life Sciences with microtomy, re-embedding, and slide preparation. This position works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
Job Responsibilities:
Performs routine histology tasks: embedding and microtomy. The use of cassette printer, timers, microscope, oven, and cover slipping. The competency for a PRN Histotechnician involves IHC Microtomy and Embedding/Re-Embedding.
Responsible for the successful execution of laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures, including decontamination protocols. Undergoes training and routine competencies for applicable tasks completed within the department.
Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling, by routinely verifying that case identification numbers match blocks and slides during each processing step.
Documents in laboratory logs and the laboratory information system (LIS), as directed by standard operating procedures.
Maintains equipment maintenance logs and ensures that the equipment is in proper working order and notifies leadership if maintenance and/or repairs are needed.
Demonstrates capability of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of tests results and takes appropriate action
Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support the laboratory, as required.
Accepts other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
A minimum of high school diploma and one year of microtomy and embedding experience.
Conditions of Employment: Individuals must successfully complete pre-employment process, which includes criminal background check, drug screening, and reference verification.
Preferred Qualifications
HT/HTL (ASCP) certification
Physical Demands
Will work at a computer some of the time as well as need to keep inventory and ordering records requiring the use of copiers, fax machines, and PDF scanners.
Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail and the ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.
Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
Must possess ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
May have exposure to high noise levels in the data center, fumes, and bio-hazardous material in the lab environment. Exposure to formaldehyde, xylene, DAB, and alcohol which emit fumes. The formaldehyde, xylene, and DAB are carcinogenic.
May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents.
Must possess ability to use a microtome for extended periods of time.
May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
Training

Other
This position requires periodic travel and some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
