Position Summary

The Director - Billing Operations - Front End is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the upfront portion of the billing process, including benefit investigations, prior authorizations, financial clearance, and payer-specific requirements. This leader will work cross-functionally with clinical operations, payor relations, and revenue cycle teams to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant billing operations that support revenue optimization and a positive patient experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Upfront Billing team responsible for insurance verifications, benefit investigations, and prior authorizations.

  • Develop and optimize workflows to ensure timely and accurate submission of all upfront billing documentation and requirements.

  • Collaborate with payor relations and contracting teams to ensure alignment between payer policies and authorization protocols.

  • Identify and implement technology solutions and process improvements that enhance operational efficiency and reduce claim denials.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for payer requirements and authorization trends to support accurate billing and reduce downstream issues.

  • Provide ongoing training, development, and performance management for team members.

  • Develop and track KPIs to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the upfront billing process.

  • Partner with analytics to monitor trends in denials, turnaround times, and payer response rates.

  • Act as a liaison with clinical and operational teams to resolve workflow issues and ensure alignment on authorization and eligibility processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in revenue cycle management with a focus on benefit verification, prior authorization, or pre-billing activities or with accessioning within a lab environment.

  • 5+ years of leadership experience in a healthcare or life sciences setting.

  • Strong understanding of payer requirements, medical necessity guidelines, and billing regulations.

  • Demonstrated success leading teams through process improvement and operational scaling.

  • Experience working with laboratory services or molecular diagnostics preferred.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proficient in EHR, billing software, and revenue cycle platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a precision medicine or laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge of billing requirements specific to genomic testing and advanced diagnostics.

  • Familiarity with commercial payer authorization workflows.

Physical Demands

  • Must possess ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

  • Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.

  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.

  • The majority of work is performed in a desk/cubicle environment.

  • This position requires periodic travel and some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
