Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Devens, MA, USA
Posted on Tuesday, July 2, 2024
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
The Assembly Engineer will be responsible for various elements of the SPARC Tokamak assembly process. The engineer will work in a cross functional mechanical engineering context to solve complex problems related to the construction of the SPARC Tokamak design, build, and activation process.

This team member will:

  • Provide design feedback to SPARC sub-system designs with a focus on manufacturing and assembly
  • Participate in both formal and informal design reviews to ensure what is delivered can be assembled
  • Scope a open ended solution for a given problem from concepts, to tooling design, through testing, all the way to implementation
  • Design, analyze, draft, and manage fabrication for custom creative tooling solutions from start to finish, owning all aspects of the project along the way
  • Work with teammates in a collaborative fashion to receive feedback early and often to ensure all requirements are met. Many SPARC projects involve high loads, vacuum requirements, and complex manipulation requiring the involvement and review of adjacent sub system experts
  • Serve as extreme owner for a process by testing, implementing, and handing off to production technicians for repeated use for any given operation or tool(s)
  • Draft and release work planning instructions to clearly and concisely outline the planned work ahead
  • Support hands on operations during Tokamak Assembly serving a variety of roles in the process

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering B.S
  • Participation in a High Engagement Non-Classroom Extracurricular Project
  • More than one 3-Month or Greater Hardware Engineering Internship
  • 2-3 Years of Mechanical Engineering experience demonstrating project ownership

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • 3+ Years of Mechanical Engineering Experience demonstrating project ownership
  • Lifting Operations Experience
  • Knowledge of Welding & Capabilities (don’t need to be able to weld)
  • Experience with Carbon Steel Welded Constructions
  • Experience with Basic Joint Design (Double Shear, Single Shear, Bolted Patterns)
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Onsite
CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.
