Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
As a Mechanical Engineer for the SPARC Antennas, you will develop design notes, technical specifications, assembly procedures and documentation necessary to manufacture and install the Antennas.
This team member will:
- Develop technical specifications, assembly procedures and documentation necessary to fabricate and install the parts
- Produce refined design concepts for efficient manufacturing and in time delivery with cost in mind is critical
- Work closely with design team and maintain regular contact with the selected vendors to provide them with necessary technical support.
- Enforce observance of the required quality standards and securing documentation and processing of the NCR’s

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or another relevant field
- At least 3 years of engineering design and analysis experience
- At least 1 year providing engineering support to production hardware in the form of resolving technical issues and executing design changes for manufacturing ramp up
- Solid background in component design and performing FEA analysis
- Experience with measurement systems, such as CMM, laser tracker, metrology and scanning tools for dimensional verification of machined components, as well as spatial measurements
- Experience with rapid prototyping and failure testing used to debug and improve designs
- Experience with machine shop environment and precision machining of high strength and tough materials
- Advanced cad skills in NX, both in modeling and drawings; understanding of GD&T and spatial tolerancing on digital measurement systems are necessary
- Familiarity with all steps in the design process with an emphasis on creativity and simplicity
- Able to communicate effectively in a team and a fast-paced environment, making well informed decisions
