Technical Community Manager
Ngrok
About ngrok Inc.
ngrok is a universal gateway trusted by over 7M developers to get their apps online faster in a secure way. With just one line of code or just one command, developers can deliver their services and offload non-functional requirements such as authentication, observability, performance, and high availability. All without provisioning legacy proxies, load balancers or VPNs. ngrok’s simplicity has made it a de-facto standard tool among developers and operations teams, and the world’s top brands — including GitHub, Okta, HashiCorp, and Twilio — recommend ngrok as a key technology partner.
Our mission is to free developers and operations teams from the complexities of networking, so they can focus on creating breakthrough apps and APIs—without getting bogged down by IPs, ports, DNS, and firewall configurations. This gives you an unparalleled opportunity to drive real innovation and make a lasting impact, all while doing the most meaningful work of your career.
The opportunity
ngrok is looking for a passionate, technical, and abundantly affable community manager to define and build a vibrant, engaged community around ngrok. As a key member of our developer relations and go-to-market (GTM) teams, you’ll take the lead in crafting a community strategy that connects with developers and engineers where they are, whether that’s on Hacker News, Reddit, Bluesky, or beyond.
You’ll have the creative freedom to shape the voice and presence of ngrok across these platforms, with the full support of cross-functional teams to bring your ideas to life. Above all else, you’ll be our point person to engage with communities in ways that are always empathetic, educational, and… dare we say fun?
This is a hybrid position and requires travel to the SF ngrok office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
What you’ll accomplish
- Develop and implement a strategy for building ngrok’s community in both owned and external channels that fosters trust and advocacy among our users
- Write a community engagement playbook to help our team — especially our engineers! — communicate confidently with folks wherever ngrok comes up online
- Consistently show up in various developer forums and platforms as our representative to answer questions and get people talking about ngrok organically
- Monitor and grow our social following with conversation and content (memes welcome!) that get folks excited about the technology we’re building
- Source, plan and manage community events like local meetups and virtual hackathons
- Define KPIs for community health and growth and track progress using engagement metrics and member feedback
- Identify champions and influencers in our community and leverage their networks to amplify our messages
- Bring community feedback to our teams to inform a product-led growth strategy that spans our GTM, product, and marketing teams
- Partner with ngrok’s GTM team to produce content — like blog posts, docs, or videos — that help developers/engineers where they are
Don’t worry, you're not alone: You’ll work closely with your direct peers in DevRel and GTM, plus plenty of others in customer success, product, and engineering.
Skills
- 3+ years of experience creating and managing community at a software or developer-focused company
- Familiarity with the tools and paradigms most relevant to our core audience of today’s infrastructure, DevOps, and platform engineers
- Strong understanding of what metrics and reports — NPS, community engagement, social listening — are most relevant to improving community health and growth
- Empathy for the developer experience and a knack for building inclusive, welcoming spaces for diverse developer audiences
- An active online presence within one more developer community (Reddit, Discord, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, etc.)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working on DevRel, customer success, or GTM teams at other early-stage and remote startups
- Bonus points if you have:
- Strong public speaking skills with a track record of successful CFPs and talks
- Experience contributing to open-source projects with code, community, or documentation
- A portfolio of published technical content or examples of community-building programs with measurable results
- Related domain knowledge in networking, DevOps tools, observability, or infrastructure automation
- An active ngrok account!
