Software Engineer (III/Senior), Admin
Ngrok
About ngrok Inc.
At ngrok, we believe that doing networking the right way should also be the easy way. Over the last 10 years, we’ve given developers and engineers simple interfaces for getting traffic into their apps and APIs without forcing them to deal with legacy proxies, external load balancers, or VPNs, and we’re now part of the standard stack for more than 9 million developers at some of the world’s top technology brands, like GitHub, Okta, HashiCorp, and Twilio.
Over the last few years, we’ve completely changed how that interface looks and works to make it easier, more composable, and infinitely flexible. We now give anyone who needs a “front door” to their apps or APIs powerful tools to orchestrate traffic, secure public endpoints, accelerate their services on a global network, observe all traffic passing to/from their network, and much more. The ngrok that millions love and trust has been completely transformed for the better.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Software Engineer (SE3 or Senior) to join our Admin Engineering team. This team builds and maintains the administrative capabilities that enable customers to securely manage, configure, and operate at scale.
In this role, you’ll shape management of identities (users and certificate-based), access patterns, and the many ways of configuring how Ngrok does its magic - both manual and programmatic (API-based).
This is a remote position for candidates outside of the Bay Area and a hybrid role for candidates within commuting distance to San Francisco. Our Bay Area employees commute to the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. At this time, ngrok is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent, ongoing basis without the need for current or future sponsorship.
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and operate core admin-facing services and APIs.
- Develop and improve IAM / RBAC / CIS systems for secure access control.
- Implement and evolve global configuration and identity management systems (domains, certificates, traffic identities, service accounts).
- Strengthen observability across agents and administrative workflows.
- Partner closely with product, design, and platform teams to ship reliable, high-quality features.
- Ensure scalability, reliability, and security of admin services in production.
- Participate in architecture and technical design decisions, advocating for long-term maintainability.
- Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews and technical guidance.
What We’re Looking For
- 3+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering production services at scale.
- Strong backend engineering experience in Go or Rust, Java, C/C++
- Hands-on working knowledge of APIs, API design, and related protocols.
- Solid understanding of security, identity, and access management systems.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, etc.) and cloud-native environments.
- Familiarity with distributed systems and ability to debug complex service interactions.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Ability to take ownership of projects and contribute to teamwide technical direction.
- Experience working on admin platforms or enterprise SaaS products.
- Familiarity with certificate management and global identity systems.
- Experience improving observability pipelines for distributed systems.
