Relativity Space

Relativity Space

Long Beach, CA, USA
Posted on Wednesday, March 1, 2023

Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Team:

The Integrated Performance team at Relativity Space is responsible for ensuring that our rockets will achieve our overall objectives. Our department comprises teams responsible for Flight Sciences, including Aerodynamics, Thermal, Loads, and Dynamics; Vehicle Simulation & Performance; Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC); and Systems Engineering. We architect and execute analysis, simulation, and test projects for all of Relativity’s hardware and software teams in pursuit of mission success and ensure that our designs and practices meet stringent customer and government requirements. This team was critical to the launch of Terran 1, among many other firsts!

What you’ll do:

As a Dynamics Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting development of the upcoming Terran R vehicle, and re-thinking launch vehicle systems around large-scale 3D printing and more streamlined manufacture and test processes. You will work collaboratively with Flight Sciences, Stage Engineering, Additive, Propulsion, Avionics, and Test teams to develop processing and analysis tools on time and budget, while meeting our technical requirements. A high degree of autonomy along with an ability to prioritize work in our fast-paced environment is required.

Here are some examples of projects you could be working on:

  • Analyze vibration, shock, and acoustic data to anchor models, generate or verify specification levels and component loads, and develop insights into vehicle and engine dynamic behavior
  • Generate forcing functions for liftoff, aerodynamics, and engine-borne dynamic excitation
  • Support vibration and shock testing of components
  • Perform transient dynamic analysis in support of Coupled Loads Analysis (CLA)
  • Perform multi-body dynamics analysis in support of Terran R design for separation events.
  • Work with hardware Responsible Engineers (REs) to make sure your results are used consistently with analysis assumptions

To be successful in this role, you should be self-motivated, eager to learn, adaptable, and able to deliver in a fast-paced, integrated vehicle program. You should also be able to resolve ambiguity and drive tasks to completion. Ideally, you have some direct experience with dynamics, vibration, shock, or acoustics, as well as a proven track record completing projects successfully as part of a technical team.

This position is ideal for engineers looking to cultivate subject matter expertise and make a direct impact on a variety of mission-critical systems and processes. The work involved with this role carries a broad influence, potentially affecting engine and vehicle structures, components, fluid systems, ground infrastructure, data analysis and software tools, instrumentation, modeling, and testing.

What you need to know:

  • An undergraduate degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, Applied Math or Physics, or a related field
  • Proficiency in Python or similar
  • Experience solving structural dynamics or vibration response problems
  • Signal processing, time and frequency domain analyses, statistical analysis

Nice to haves but not required:

  • A graduate degree (MS/PhD) in engineering or related field and 3+ years relevant experience
  • Hands-on experience with testing, instrumentation, and data analysis at the component and system levels
  • Experience with high-speed instrumentation measuring vibration, shock, fluctuating pressures
  • Experience in an analysis role on an integrated vehicle program
  • Familiarity with liquid rocket engine architectures, launch vehicle structural and/or fluid systems, aircraft or rocket aerodynamics
  • Familiarity with vibration analysis software like Nastran, VA One, Wave6
  • Familiarity with vibroacoustic analysis
  • Familiarity with Coupled Loads Analysis (CLA) and Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) analysis

Relativity Space offers competitive salary and equity, a generous vacation policy, an annual L&D stipend and more!
