The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Telematics Platform team. In this role, you will be responsible for working collaboratively with Data Scientists and other Engineers to support Machine Learning model development, deployment, and operations. Senior Engineers are expected to contribute high quality code, work well with cross-functional stakeholders, and own project delivery end-to-end.

The Telematics Platform Engineering Team primarily supports the Telematics Data Science team in developing best in class Telematics solutions that turn granular driving data into powerful predictors of auto insurance risk to be used for pricing and customer experience. This small team has supported one of Root’s founding capabilities and we’re looking to expand that impact.

Salary Range: $117,000 - $144,200

How You Will Make an Impact

Software Engineers at Root are accountable for project delivery and maintenance of their team’s systems. This role requires clear communication with peers and stakeholders, technical proficiency across domains, and strong collaborative instincts and skills – all to ensure high-quality and impactful changes are delivered reliably for our business. Successful engineers in this role work closely with their team.

Responsibilities of this role:

  • Analyze the needs of the Data Scientists and the business.

  • Design, test and develop the software to meet those needs.

  • Recommend upgrades for existing systems and programs.

  • Develop separate elements of a software that work well in the program as a whole.

  • Create various diagrams, flowcharts and models that illustrate the type of code needed for programmers.

  • Ensure continued functionality of a system during maintenance and testing of software.

  • Document each aspect of a system or application as a reference for future upgrades and maintenance.

  • Revisit the development process to fix bugs or address client or stakeholder concerns.

What you will need to succeed

  • 3+ years of experience working in a Data Engineering or Machine Learning Engineering/Ops role.

  • Experience working with Python and data transformation tools, such as Spark.

  • Experience working with cloud-based, serverless Machine Learning pipeline components, such as AWS Step Functions, Sagemaker, Athena, and Glue.

  • Experience with Infrastructure-As-Code, such as Terraform.

  • Basic understanding of Machine Learning and ML development strategies.

  • Fluent usage of version control tools.

  • Experience deploying to AWS.

  • Familiarity with Buildkite for continuous integration.

  • Good knowledge of databases and SQL.

  • Write clean, functional, well-tested code.

  • The ability to follow existing patterns and aim for consistency with the rest of the code.

  • Suggest new patterns to increase the effectiveness of the code or team.

  • Understands and takes business goals into account when making implementation decisions.

  • Provide good feedback on other teammates’ work in code reviews.

  • Work with the engineering lead and teammates to answer questions about their work.
