The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Director, State Product Management. At Root, we’re doing things differently. We’ve reimagined the car insurance industry to make it smarter, more equitable, and a better experience for all. Using technology in smartphones, we’re able to measure driving behavior to give our customers the prices they deserve.

Consumer auto insurance is a competitive industry, so offering an industry leading insurance product specifically tailored to each state is essential to differentiate ourselves from the competition. This team lives at the heart of our promise to “unbreak” auto insurance and deliver that world-class product. Our State Product Management team works alongside the actuarial and regulatory groups, with significant interactions with data scientists, product managers and engineers to decide how to set and implement state-based strategy at Root.

As a State Manager, you’ll be responsible for leading business operations in 3 of Root’s existing markets, as well as leading Roots expansion into one of our remaining large, untapped markets, such as New York, Massachusetts or North Carolina. Each of these has significant regulatory complexity. You’ll be expected to challenge Root’s current product offering and customize them for application to the new markets.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus and offices in other locations to give more flexibility and more choice about how we live and work.

Salary Range: $157,000 to $191,000

How You Will Make an Impact:

• Drive results. You will set rate levels, customize the franchise products, and deal with state idiosyncrasy to achieve profitable growth

• Manage relationships with Departments of Insurance. You will manage relationships during filings, market conduct exams, and as we refine and advance our insurance products

• Collaborate with Marketing to craft state specific customer acquisition strategies to maximize the value of the book.

• Lead our expansion into a new market. You'll work closely with Legal, Actuarial, and Data Science to define product requirements, customizing our franchise product. You'll be responsible for the success of the build, launch, and performance in the new state

• We believe diversity of thought results in better business outcomes. Our insurance experts work closely with our technology experts to create our competitive advantages. As an insurance expert, you’ll share your experiences and perspectives with technology experts to enhance our product offering.

• Conduct frequent and thorough analysis of state performance to identify opportunities and inform decision making

• Identify opportunities for automation and work closely with Product and Engineering to define requirements and design solutions

What You Will Need to Succeed:

• 7+ years of state P&L responsibility within personal lines insurance, or related experience

• Mental flexibility – Root does things differently, you’ll need to blend your experience with our data-science-forward and technology-based approach to insurance products

• Top-notch storytelling skills and an ability to influence executives

• Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences

• Relentless focus on business outcomes

• Comfort in pushing the status quo and utilizing cutting edge analytical techniques. Experience using SQL to conduct data analysis preferred

• Thrives in a fast-paced work environment, prioritizing and executing on the most critical projects

• Superior teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills
