The Opportunity

We are looking for a Director of Engineering to join and lead engineering at Root. As a Director, you will manage engineering managers and senior engineers across multiple teams and product domains (e.g. Pricing, Underwriting, Claims, etc). You’ll be responsible for technical strategy, the effectiveness and health of your teams, and ensuring your direct reports are growing and developing as managers and leaders.

Salary Range: $225,000 - $265,000

How you will make an impact

• Partner with Product, Data Science, Analytics, Security, and experts in the Insurance Operations group to set the strategy for the quarters to come

• Effectively manage managers and senior engineers within your organization to ensure they are performing well in their role

• Use an appropriate mixture of coaching, directive feedback, and delegation to achieve business, team, and individual goals

• Identify gaps in the team and develop plans to address those gaps via individual development, hiring, or partnership

• Engage in regular and productive performance conversations as a part of 1:1s and dedicated reviews

• Continuously evaluate the performance and effectiveness of your teams’ process in order to improve things over time

• Work closely with senior leaders in Engineering to improve the effectiveness of the Engineering organization as a whole

• Develop and ensure execution of technical strategy for your teams and Engineering as a whole to solve clear problems for the business

What you will need to succeed

• 7+ years as a people manager on software teams

• 12+ years in software engineering as a manager and individual contributor

• Proven leadership of strategic initiatives involving multiple teams across functional domains

• Excellent communication skills both with cross-functional colleagues and senior business leaders
