PRODUCTION MANAGER, THERMAL PROTECTION SYSTEMS

SpaceX revolutionizes the launch market through use of reusable technology to drive down price and increase accessibility. Atmospheric reentry and the extreme environments associated are one of the top challenges of making a reusable spacecraft. The Production Manager for the Thermal Protection Systems will own and operate the high volume production facilities of the most vital systems to protect the spacecraft from reentry while allowing for rapid reuse and economical re-flight.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate state of the art manufacturing sites for low density alumina-silica refractory insulation
  • Optimize tile factory in operations, scrap rate, material utilization, energy consumption
  • Lead and manage a staff of 40+ technicians, leads, and supervisors for 24/7 operations
  • Manage the modification, repair, assembly and integration of production assemblies in order to guarantee achievement of on time delivery, cost, and quality targets
  • Ensure a strong focus is placed on safety and achieve excellent safety performance with the team
  • Play a leading role in ensuring root causes for quality issues are identified and appropriate improvement actions are put in place
  • Review work instructions and production processes and make change recommendations when needed to improve processes
  • Meet tight production schedules to achieve high rate production
  • Achieve cost targets by improving labor efficiency and driving design for manufacturability improvements
  • Coordinate with engineering and other departments to minimize production interruptions
  • Develop, improve, and own machine maintenance schedules and critical spares inventory

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, engineering physics, or other engineering field
  • 5+ years of experience in a leadership position
  • 3+ years in a production/manufacturing environment
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles
  • Experience using SQL, Python, PowerBI, Tableau or any other bulk data analyses methods

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in engineering field
  • Experience bringing teams and processes from development to production
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels in the organization, including production technicians, engineering, and the Executive level leaders
  • Technical understanding and practical knowledge of material and chemical manufacturing processes or systems integration
  • Experience working with large-scale manufacturing machines
  • Experience working with automated controls systems or programming
  • Demonstrated record of high-performance
  • Experience identifying, analyzing and implementing production process improvements for rate and quality
  • Experience monitoring, tracking and continually improving complete and accurate production cost equation

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Must be able to travel to other SpaceX sites; up to 10% travel
  • Ability to pass Space Force background checks for Cape Canaveral

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Manager, Production: $130,000.00 - $180,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Exempt employees are eligible for 5 days of sick leave per year.
