Build Engineer, Integration (Starship Super Heavy Booster)

SpaceX

SpaceX

Texas, USA
Posted on Saturday, June 24, 2023

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

BUILD ENGINEER, INTEGRATION (STARSHIP SUPER HEAVY BOOSTER)

Build Engineers are hands on with the product and are responsible for developing requirements and facilities capable of building orbital Super Heavy Boosters, faster than anyone thought possible. The Booster integration will make or break the rate of launches and we are looking to grow the team of engineers tackling this challenge. The Starship launch system will be the world's most powerful and high rate launch vehicle ever developed, with the ability to carry in excess of 100 metric tons to Earth orbit.

In order to establish a self-sustaining base in Mars or the Moon we will ultimately need to build thousands of vehicles and this team will be at the forefront of this production.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate as a systems level engineer to collect production requirements then plan and execute the build, integration, and validation of flight hardware to those requirements
  • Design and implement tooling solutions to eliminate assembly error, improve quality, and accelerate build
  • Automate novel processes to ensure repeatability on a large scale production line
  • Prove that a subsystem work center meets cycle time requirements, or own the design change required to meet target cycle time
  • Become a subject matter expert for the build of a vehicle level system like aero control surfaces, propellant feed systems, actuation systems, thermal protection systems, secondary structures, avionics, primary structure, etc.
  • Generate and maintain design for manufacturing requirements for the processes used to build Super Heavy Boosters

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering or engineering physics
  • 1+ year of hands-on project and build experience with complex mechanical, fluid, or avionics systems
  • 2+ years of manufacturing planning and process design experience

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 1+ year of system level acceptance test exposure
  • 2+ years of professional experience in the field of aerospace/mechanical engineering
  • 2+ years of experience with GD&T concepts
  • Experience with large steel structure construction (civil, naval, or mechanical)
  • Experience with mechanical design, including basic structures calculations and design considerations
  • Experience in process development, facility and line layouts, error-proofing, factory optimization, lean principles
  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter CAD, PLM, Process Simulate, and other automation systems
  • Prior experience with developing, maintaining and improving welding processes
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Flight hardware typically is built in tight quarters and physical dexterity is required
  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings and climbing hand over hand
  • Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • Schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility required
  • Flexibility to travel to remote build sites, up to 10%

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Mechanical/Aerospace Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year
Mechanical/Aerospace Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00/per year
