ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY ENGINEER (RECOVERY)
The EHS Recovery Engineer supports on and offshore space vehicle hardware recovery. This position is critical to the rapid reuse of SpaceX launch vehicles, and the team relies on the EHS Recovery Engineer to be a subject matter expert capable of mitigating occupational and compliance risk as they strive to meet aggressive targets and stretch the capabilities of existing processes to meet company goals. The EHS Recovery Engineer’s primary tasks are to ensure environmental compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements applicable to recovery globally. In addition, the EHS Recovery Engineer will perform hazard assessments, incident investigations, work through employees’ safety concerns and issues, attend design reviews, as well as strategize to prevent/reduce injuries.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Environmental
- For multiple states/jurisdictions, develop, implement, maintain, and improve environmental policies and programs including but not limited to the following:
- Manage all components of Hazardous and Non-Hazardous waste management programs including waste characterization, profiling, documenting, reporting, and disposal coordination
- Prepare and maintain Spill Prevention Control Countermeasures (SPCC) plans as required
- Prevent, control, investigate, and report spills and releases in accordance with various on and offshore jurisdictional requirements
- Perform work in an offshore/marine environment
- Develop and submit permits and perform inspections, monitoring and reporting as required by local, state, and federal environmental regulations
- Perform inspections, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting as required by local, state, and/or federal air quality regulations
- Perform periodic environmental compliance and due diligence audits which will include on air, wastewater, storm water, regulated waste, and/or materials management programs
- Perform any federal/state/local required environmental monitoring and reporting as required by environmental mitigation programs that have been agreed to by SpaceX
- Review and interpret new and proposed environmental laws and regulations, and provide guidance to management regarding applicability and implementation
Safety
- Implement and maintain site specific safety policies and programs including the following tasks:
- Assist in ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations
- Assist in development of a proactive approach to preventing and solving workplace safety issues
- Perform work in an offshore/marine environment
- Complete job hazard assessments and personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments
- Execute field monitoring of employee exposures to workplace chemical and physical hazards
- Recommend process adjustments and/or equipment that will reduce employees’ exposure to chemical and physical work hazards
- Assist with completion and maintenance of required safety logs and documentation including submitting reports as requested
- Assist with investigations of industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine root causes, corrective actions and preventive measures
- Monitor safety reports submitted by operational and engineering teams
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 3+ years of experience in the design, development, and general operational oversight of environmental, health and safety disciplines
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Ability to hold and maintain a registered paramedic certification, ALCS, and CPR
- Experience in maritime operations
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations
- Experience in offshore EHS and paramedic environments
- Experience with emergency response crews in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water
- Experience using Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
- Demonstrated strong propensity for hands-on work and attention to detail in either academic or career pursuits
- Ability to multi-task, to manage shifting priorities, and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision
- Ability to communicate well with technicians, engineers, and management
- Ability to work in a high-concentration, fast-paced environment
- Strong organizational and communication skills
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This is not a remote or hybrid position and will require relocation if not already local to the Cape Canaveral, FL area
- Position occasionally requires the ability to work extended hours or weekends when needed
- Ability to travel extensively to support Recovery operations, which includes ocean-going activities
- Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
- Ability lift at least 30 lbs unassisted
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Pay range:
EHS Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year
EHS Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00/per year
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX.
